first want to thank all of you for your enormous support and generosity over the past week. I received a number of phone calls and emails filled with good wishes in response to my new column in the Sea to Sky News. It is my pleasure to be with you every week and I return the thanks for embracing me with open arms.

Now down to business!

This weeks Question

Hi Adam,

Thanks for the great article in the recent edition of Sea To Sky News (August 21/08).

My question is in regards to milk products. I don't eat a lot of milk products for no other reason than I tend to eat a simple diet which involves soy milk and maybe a bit of cheese.

However, now that I have small children, I am buying more and milk products because I have read and heard that milk (calcium) is very important for growing bodies. My children have milk, yoghurt, and cheese each day.

I recently read a book claiming the dairy (and red meat industries) have really pushed the "health benefits" of their products to promote their sales. And, that milk products are really not as critical for children as what my generation has grown up to believe.

In addition, this book talked about other countries in the world (especially Asian cultures) which consume minimal amounts of dairy products but still maintain well-balanced diets.

What are your thoughts on this issue?

Thanks

My Thoughts

Your inquiry into the importance of milk is a fantastic first question to receive. The topic is worthy of an entire book, but for the sake of all the readers I will keep my thoughts to a few paragraphs.

I grew up all meat and potatoes. If I did not have a piece of meat on my plate where was my protein coming from? How about the iron? As for dairy, right from a young age I learnt from multiple sources, whether it was family, friends, teachers and my doctor or television commercials all about the importance of eating dairy to ensure I received the calcium necessary to have strong and healthy bones.

How many of you can relate to this?

There is a lot of politics involved when it comes to the world’s resources and food is one of the biggest. Without getting too political, we are at the mercy of big agriculture and therefore we are forced to consume their multi million dollar marketing campaigns. For decades we have been told of the benefits of eating meat and dairy. I am not here to tell you to stop eating them, but I know first hand that my ability to regain control over my own health started when I reduced my intake of meat and dairy.

I leant about the Power of Food at the age of 28, until then I just ate

Having discovered “whole foods”, which are nuts and seeds, grains and beans, fruits and vegetable at the age of 28, I have since been able to regain control over my weight, my pre-diabetic state, cholesterol levels, energy levels and so much more. At first I could not believe how great I was feeling, eating seeds and grains in replacement to meat and dairy. When I began to switch my daily consumption of meat and dairy to whole foods, many of my friends were stunned as they started to make fun of me for eating like a bird. Some would say it’s not very manly, eating seeds, but who cares what others think if you’re feeling great and I started to feel fantastic. No more bloating, my heartburn started to disappear and I even began to lose a few pounds.

The point is that in North America we over consume steak, burgers, cheese, milk etc. to the point where our bodies are having difficulty functioning on a healthy level. I know now my living off Zantac (antacid) for three years to ease my daily heartburn was due to the excessive protein I consumed through meat and dairy. Having discovered many alternative sources of calcium, iron and protein such as hemp seeds and quinoa (grain) my digestion has improved and my nutrient absorption has increased, improving my overall health.

When feeding our families it is important that we begin to start taking matters into our own hands. Kerri, it sound as if you have begun to do this by reading a book based on the dairy and meat industries. By creating our own awareness we are able to make healthier choices for our families.

I have so much more to say about this topic, but so little space to say it. Therefore I would like to offer everyone an opportunity to take part in a FREE teleclass on this very subject on Tuesday September 2 at 6:30pm. During this 30 minute talk I will share with you my top three tips when eating meat and dairy as well as my top power foods for calcium, protein and iron. If you are interested in taking part please email me at info@poweroffood.com and I will provide you with the access code. Due to limited space this opportunity is only available to the first 20 people who contact me.

"Living from the Eye of the Storm"

Hey All

Well I am now married....Yahhoooo. Since the July 19th Big Day I have been having lots of fun. One of the highlights has been calling Suzie my wife. It's funny how warm and comforting saying "my wife" has made me feel and I couldn't have wished for a better partner to share my days with. The wedding was a blast and we are both so happy with the way everything turned out. Having all our friends and family around over the past month has been a real treat and I look forward to the married life.

For the past month I have spent most of my time enjoying each and every moment without the pressure of having to get things done. At first taking the month off was causing me stress as I am conditioned to the 9-5 gig that so many of us North Americans spend our daily routines doing. Having begun to create a different way of living, one that allows me the time to do what I want when I want, was something I never expected to happen so fast.

On July 1 I decided to take off the entire month. Yes getting married on the 19th made it easy to make this decision, but I could still have put time in up until the 14th of July when guests started to arrive. Instead I decided to remove myself from the hurricane around me and chose to live the next month from what I call "The Eye of the Storm".

Have you ever felt as if your whole life was like living in a hurricane? Everyday accomplishing tasks on your "to do" list and then by the end of the day adding a few more things back on the list for tomorrow? Each and every day spent occupied by accomplishing things on your "to do" list? This is like trying to paddle up a river without any paddles.....YOU CAN"T DO IT. What if you where able to turn that boat around? How nice do you think it would feel if you were now able to float down river with ease? Throw away your "to do" list and feel how great it is to start going with the current of life instead of against it.

The first few days in July were met with feelings of guilt for not getting up at 7am and being at my desk and ready to go by 8am. This was followed by feelings of stress roughly at the start of week two. If i'm not being productive in some way how are things going to get done, how am I going to keep progressing, who's going to come and visit this blog?. These were the thoughts that kept creeping into my mind as I battled to enjoy my time off and just breathe a little.

As the month rolled on everything seemed to become a little clearer. There was no pressure to achieve something each and every second of every day. I found that by the time I was ready to get back to being productive, all the things that I would normally spend my time doing on my "to do" list were getting done on their own. It was as if I had put my attention, energy and focus into just observing all the chaos around me without needing to touch, fix or respond to each little thing. I call this "living from the eye of the storm" I had entered a state where I was able to be the witness of all the chaos around me, but from a place of being calm and free. As long as I continued to consciously live from this place, everything around me seemed to take care of itself.

For those of you who would like to know what it feels like to live with ease and begin regaining control over your own health, I encourage you to begin today. Think of it as if you were going to train in the gym and build some muscle. If you go to the gym for one week will you have any more muscle? not really, but if you train long term your muscles will grow and keep strong. That is the same for living with ease. I have been feeding myself countless exercises on how to live consciously and I am just starting to tap into the real power of conscious intention. My conscious muscles are getting stronger each day and my life around me is the results of this intention.

It is possible to live a life of purpose and joy each and every day. You just have to want it bad enough and then start living it. I encourage you to use any resource possible to being strengthening your own consciousness such as the internet (www.ted.com is a great site and sign up for www.tut.com) read books such as "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle and find mentors (I would love to be that for you) and keep trusting in the process.

"Living from the eye of the storm" is a tough thing to comprehend when many of us are conditioned from such a young age to do and be a certain way, but it's in the letting go that we find the space to breath, be still, be present and become the witness of our lives. It's from this place that we make conscious decisions that propel us forward to achieve all our dreams and goals with ease.

Still Getting Married

Hey Power of Foodies

Well it's now only 5 days away. The excitement is getting higher and higher every day. I just got back yesterday from my "Stag" party. WOW, what a trip (pic's to come soon). 7 of my buddies took me in a helicopter for a trip up into the Tantalus mountain range (BC, Canada) for three days of mountaineering and yes a little drinking was involved.

What a great time to be, in the mountains. It's amazing how easy being with nature in any form allows such extreme presence to appear. I spent most of my time over the past three days really living from a place of "JOY". As many of you know, this is not always an easy thing to do, but I have been practicing living my life this way for some time now. The more you practice, the easier and stronger it gets, just like working out a muscle. I now know this from experience. Keep working on stepping out of your own way by being present more often and not caught up in your everyday pattern and I promise you will start to see your life unfold into your every desire. This past weekend strengthened my resolve to continue on this path of least resistance.

WHAT YOU RESIST PERSISTS"

Enjoy each moment of each day and let the universe do the rest. I am a perfect example of how this stuff works. No more weight issues, tones of energy, very little stress, cholesterol under control, anxiety attacks long gone as well as my old depression, food allergies under control as well as my asthma. If any of these things relate to you, you know how tough things can be. Stop living through them and begin NOW to live without them and see what transpires.

You are a source of inspiration to me and everyone around you. Now it's time to start being that for yourself!

Send me all you positive energy for the week all. Thanks for coming to check out my blog and I will have pics of the stag up soon.

I'm Getting Married

Hey Power of Foodies

So it's JULY. AHHHHHH...that happened very fast. It was February 22 of last year just yesterday..wasn't it? This was the day I ask my July 19th bride Suzie to marry me. Lucky for me she said yes, because Suzie is by far the best thing that has ever happened to me. Not only has she been my biggest supported over the years while working on bringing the Power of Food to a larger audience, but she continues to be willing try all my creations in the kitchen, which don't always turn out so yummy.

I can truly say that I feel blessed for the direction my life has taken. As many of you know, it was not too long ago that I was overweight, fighting depression, anxiety attacks and suffering from enormous stress.

me at age 26
The road we are on is a choice. We all have the power within to choose a healthier road, we just need to find the sources of light to bring in and not always focus on removing the darkness. One source of light can change your life forever....for me one of those sources was Suzie.

I look forward to sharing my wedding with all of you over the coming weeks. I will do my best to post daily blogs of all the happenings as my life is full of many wonderful characters that are sure to make my posts even more entertaining.

Don't we make a grrrrrrrreat couple!

Thanks AVH'ers

Well summer has arrived and what better time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful sun. Over the past weekend I held my 4th Achieving Vibrant Health workshop in downtown Vancouver. In the past I have put a lot of pressure on myself to pack these events with Power of Foodies like yourself. If the turnout did not reach my expectations (any less than 25 participants) I would be upset with myself for not making it happen. Over the past weekend I learnt a valuable lesson and one that will be with me forever.

I want to give a very special thank you to the 9 Power of Foodies who decided to come to AVH on a Sunday, during a long weekend and with the sun blasting all day long. Your decision to come spend the day inside a hotel learning about healthy eating, really lifted me to a new level of gratitude. I can't thank you enough for allowing me to share with you the Power of Food and I look forward to having you a part of the Power of Food community.

I realize now that numbers don't mean anything. If only one person shows up, I am the luckiest guy on earth.

"How you do anything is how you do everything"

From this day forward I will always give my all and be 100% present with you, whether I am working one on one or in front of an audience of 1000.

I am now off to get married on July 19th. WISH ME LUCK!!

I will keep you posted on how things are going. Lots of family and friends coming to town who will be introduced to the B.C. life for the first time as well as the Power of Food .

Keep well

Great Question

Hi Adam
I just received your book "Power of Food 30-day Program" I am very excited about the potential of changing my eating habits to include a much healthier life style and choice of food. My question is: How do I manage my eating habits throughout the day. ie. how do you recommend I eat throughout the day to support improved health and weight loss beyond the integrating of seeds, nuts, legumes and grains.

Thanks
Brent

“from the Hart”

Hey Brent

Thanks for the questions and I am happy to here your received the program.

The 30 day program is a system for easily introducing whole foods into our daily routine. These “whole foods” are foods that have not been broken down, altered or transformed in any way and contain superior nutrition for which most of our bodies are starving for. This is due to the lack of nutrients found in many of our current diets, which consist mainly of processed foods, void of essential health. Each of the 30 days provides one recipe per day. The idea is that by the end of the 30 days you have all 6 of the “Power of Food Groups” nuts, seeds, grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, as an integral part of your kitchen. In order to help make this happen, there are equal amounts of creative recipes to cover breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. Once you have tried many of these recipes, you will find that it is quite easy to incorporate these key, high energy, lower glycemic and stress reducing foods. It’s at this point that you will be able to provide your body and mind with the essential nutrients throughout the day. It is in the creative inclusion of these foods that will support improved health and weight loss. There is no beyond these foods. Found within the variety of these 6 foods, all the vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and essential fatty acids, can be found.

Brent, in the end it’s all about following the 80/20 rule. 80% of the time, eat “whole foods”, the other 20% eat whatever you want, whenever you want. It’s not about restrictions. It’s all about increasing the nutritional value in the foods you already love to eat.

Thanks again for the questions

Ask Adam

Hey Power of Foodies

I can't thank you enough for staying in touch. Some of the greatest satisfaction I get from spreading the message of the Power of Food is hearing back from you. I encourage you to KEEP THE QUESTIONS COMING...I Love them!

Here are a few more I would like to share with you.....enjoy

1. Power Bar Recipe
I attended your information session last month. Since then I have added the three items you had suggested into my diet. The Hemp seed, Whole Oat Groats and the Quinoa.

I recall you giving us an easy recipe for home made power bars including dates and whole oat groats. I must be missing an ingredient as after soaking the whole oats and adding the dates, the mixture would not stick together… I even added a little honey to see if that would work. Could you please let me know what I am doing wrong J

Regards,
Rebecca

"from the Hart"
Hey Rebecca
WAY TO GO. It took me a few goes before I got it down.
It is probably your portions. Try using less dates and more whole oat groats. If then it still does not stick together, try adding a handful of ground seeds or nuts of your choice. The nuts or seeds will help bind the mix together.

Thanks for the email and let me know how it goes on the next batch.
In Good Health
Adam

Here is that recipe for all of you to enjoy.

Adam' Power Booster Bar Recipe
1. 1 cup whole oat groats
2. 1/2 cup pitted dates

Separately, soak dates in 3 cups of water and whole oat groats in 4 cups of water, overnight. The following day discard the water of the whole oat groats and rinse. In a food processor place the soaked date with only half the water that the dates soaked in. Blend dates in food processor. Now add the whole oat groats. Blend the mixture together until it becomes a smooth paste. You want the mix to stick together firmly. If it is too loose, add some ground nuts or seeds of choice until desired constancy is reached. If the mix is to firm add a little of the date water.

Once blended together, place parchment paper into a baking dish and add the mixture on top. Push down on the mix until evenly spread and ideal bar size of choice. Place into refrigerator overnight and the following day cut into small bar size. Place portions into the freezer and pull out bars as needed. This recipe will last several months in the freezer, but should be gone way before that. If you have any trouble, let me now and I will help you out. This took me a few tries before it worked. Once you get it you can create endless varieties of bars for all your energy needs.

Recipe Tip: Place leftover date water into a small ice cube tray. Use frozen date cubes as an alternative sweetener in tea, cereals or any other creative way.

ENJOY!

2. Food package Labeling
Do you suggest writing to your local MP regarding the desire to have more facts on labels or is that already in the works?

Thanks
Linda

"from the Hart"
Hi Linda
When I first discovered how important food was for my health I realized how much more was going on behind the scenes. After having taken a political role in our food security for almost 3 years (on several fronts) I came to the realization that the best course of action was my own awareness and putting all my energy towards sharing my knowledge with family and friends. Showing others just 1 way to improve their ability to eat healthy provided me with more energy than I ever got fighting the system.
Putting our energy in the right place is crucial especially since many of us are so pressed for energy these days. I recommend writing a letter if you wish, but my past experience has shown that a better rate of return has come from picking up the phone and sharing some knowledge with a friend.
Our ability to shake up the system lies in our collective consciousnesses expanding and you have the ability to help awaken those around you. I encourage you to walk each day, hour, minute and second knowing you are the power source for all those around you. Keep up the great work!

Ask Adam

Hello Power of Foodies

Here are a few of the most recent questions I have received. Please feel free to use this blog to continue asking questions or to share any related information or recipe's.

1. Calories

Hi Adam

I was just wanting to find out if you know the calorie content in the Hemp Chocolate Chip cookies? They seemn very delicious, but per cookie, how many calories?

Cheers
Elise

"from the Hart"

Hi Elise

I understand the desire to know the calorie count, but it's not the calories that matter, it's what ingredients make up the cookie (calories). Based on our choices of cookies, these all natural cookies will provide you with essential nutrients not found in commercial cookies. As for calories, there count is similar to store bought cookies, but mean something entirely different. Different because they offer superior nutritional value and therefore, per calorie, act differently in your body.

So in other words....each bite is a very healthy, nutritious and tasty thing that in moderation, will provide you with essential nutrients the body craves while supplying you with a boost in energy and helping to regulate your blood sugar levels.

"It's not the calories that count, it's what's in the calories that count"

Sorry for the long answer. I hope this was valuable. Enjoy the cookies

2. Shelf Life

Could you please tell me when you buy refrigerated hemp seeds, how long their shelf life is in the fridge. Should there be a best before sticker on them? When I bought them, they did not have an expiry date on them.

Thanks
Linda

"from the Hart"

Hi Linda

In the fridge hemp seeds will last about three months. If you do not need to replace your supply at least once a month, you need to find more ways to use them. Add a tablespoon to your cereal, smoothies, soups, salads, just about anything works when adding hemp seeds. The hemp seed is my number one nutritional resource and I use it as my supplement, vitamin, my all around go to food for boosting my health.

Keep well and stay in touch

3. Recommended Daily Intake

Hi Adam,

I was just at your Achieving Vibrant Health seminar a few weeks ago and I have a question for you. If I were to eat 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds and ground flax a day how much of my "recommended" daily intake of vitamins & mineral would I be getting?

I will be cooking more using the recipes and ingredients that you suggested so I know I will be getting more of what I need. I am just curious about the daily hemp/flax impact.

Thanks for your time,
Gloria

"from the Hart"

Hi Gloria

I would not worry so much about the numbers as far as the amount of vitamins and minerals. Many of us are so void of essential nutrients that we need all we can get. By eating 3 tablespoons of hemp and flax per day you will be boosting your nutrient intake to a very positive level for your overall health regardless of what else you are including. Just remember that with Fibre (flax being the best source) it is key to start slow with a tablespoon per day for about 1 week and then increase to two for a week and then to 3 tablespoons per day for the rest of your life. It is also key to remain hydrated wtih WATER in order to avoid unwanted digestive problems such as bloating or constipation.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions. I would also be happy to discuss the option of providing you with any further consulting either over the phone or in person if this is of interest in the future.

All the best

"from the Hart"

These are just a few samples of the many questions I have been receiving from you lately. The sense I am getting through all your questions is that you all really want to be healthier, you just need to have a little help along the way.

"YOU ARE NOT ALONE"

There are people right here, right now, exactly where you are and would love to hear from you and share your passion for discovering a healthier you. Share your energy through a question or request and watch what happens.

I can't thank you enough for allowing me to be a part of your quest for health and I hope you continue to USE ME as we all work together to awaken the health within.

Allowing

Hey Everybody

Well I have just come back from a great trip to Toronto. I got the chance to hang out with my 3 year old niece, Geri for the first time in almost a year. It's amazing how much kids grow between the ages of 2 and 3. In the past I would have found myself dwelling on all that lost time and the things I missed seeing her do for the first time, such as eating her first handful of hemp seeds, which my sister beat me to, ha, ha. Not anymore. Several years ago I discovered the Power of Food and during the same time I discovered the power of positive thinking. Now that I have seen first hand what positive thinking can manifest, it has allowed me to live from a place of joy and purpose. This last week with Geri and other family members was spent sharing in positive energy and not living in the past or the present, but in the living essence of the very moment of each and every day. It's funny how kids seem to get this idea very easily. Geri has become a beautiful little girl with lots of life. She doesn't live on past experience or spend countless hours dwelling on the future, she is ever present in the NOW, just like a precious flower in nature.

Many of our daily actions have become routine and controlled to the extent that we have forgotten or have never really known who we are or what our purpose is. If this is speaking to you than I want to say HELLO, YOU ARE NOT ALONE! So many of us live this way and our health is a reflection of this unconscious survival. Not only are you not alone, but by reading this you have now become a part of a growing collective of like minded people searching for something more, something REAL. I am here to tell you that you are so close to shifting and awakening the health within. The final step to the realization of what is possible for you lies within the process of ALLOWING.

ALLOWING is the elimination of doubt. If you doubt you are capable of achieving your wildest dreams, than you will be forever lost in the cage of your thoughts. The ego (your little voice, you know the one, we all have at least one) wants you were you are, likes the status quo, feels comfort in the routine. If the routine is driving you health into the dumps, than it's time to remove the doubt and begin to allow yourself the freedom to achieve your life's purpose. Even the idea of becoming healthier does not have to be a daunting task and by being here
RIGHT NOW, you have brought the reality of awakening the health within even closer.

I am coming from this pace of distress. As many of you know, over 8 years ago I was so full of stress, depression, anxiety, overweight, pre-diabetic, etc, etc, etc. that my entire life was essential crumbling around me. That was the old Adam. The new Adam lives through Joy and purpose and cherishes every moment of every minute of ever hour of very day, week, month and year. You can have your cake and eat it too, you just have to start allowing and never, ever doubt yourself along the way.

You are a source of inspiration and I am happy you are here RIGHT NOW.

Just "Being"

Hi Power of Foodies

It's been a little while since my last post and I want to apologize for that. You see, for the longest time I have been working very hard on bringing my message on how to become healthier through food to a larger audience. Somewhere along the way I got caught up in the idea that everything I do has to be perfect and if it is not, than forget it. The blog is one of those. I realize now that it's not about being perfect, its about "being". I am just at the tail end of the worst cold I have had since I started on my Power of Food journey over 7 years ago. My desire for perfection has always been unrealistic. There is no perfection, there just is. Now my message to you has grown to include not only the ways in which to become healthier through food, but due to my own sacrifices in health and wellness, my message now includes the ever evolving ways to discover how to just "be". It is in our ability to live our lives as human "Beings" as opposed to humans "Doing", that we reach a true level of wellness that can be sustained long term. It is who we have to be to become healthier that counts and not in the doing. This is relatively new concept for me, "Being", and I have to thank many mentors and visionaries for helping me find the way. Two special thanks go out to Michael Losier, author of Law of Attraction, who has been a personal mentor of mine now for about a year and Eckhart Tolle, who book's "The Power of Now" and "A New Earth" have helped me understand what the idea of "Being" is all about.

Food is so important to our health and I am ready to help you in any way to awaken the health within. The idea of "Being" is just as important to your health as food and I highly recommend checking out www.oprah.com to watch her interviews with Eckhart Tolle on his book, A New Earth.

I will be writing more often in my blog, because not only does it feel GREAT to share and just "BE" without fear of perfection, but it is a wonderful way for me to stay in touch with every one of you. I truly would love to hear from each and every one of you with any questions you may have or if you just need someone to talk to. Until the next post.......

p.s. You know I read over my message about 3 times before posting it. Usually it would be a lot more than that. YAHOO. I'm working on the perfection thing and it sure feels good to let go a little.
